Type: Interiors
Date: 2020-2021

In 2017 HemingwayDesign were appointed by Real Ideas Organisation as overall aesthetic lead consultants and interior designers for the Market Hall Plymouth. Having opened in summer 2021, the Market Hall is set to become a landmark for digital innovation and learning.

The historic market hall now provides flexible open plan and cellular co-working areas, tech lab, places to breakout, meet and gather informally over the two floors of this dramatic double height space, centred around the original iconic four-way staircase. Whilst a contemporary extension to this iconic historic building, is home to an awe-inspiring 15m dome offering experiences at the cutting edge of immersive tech, alongside a café and flexible event spaces.

As lead designers our role incorporated space-planning, specification of finishes, bespoke fixtures, furniture concept design and FF&E.

Our concept juxtaposes clean contemporary design using modern sustainable materials such as plywood, woodwool slab, acoustic felt, translucent recycled polycarbonate and fresh playful colours with the building’s existing brickwork shell and industrial architectural features.

Quiet booths, mobile screens and furniture allow for a flexible environment to suit a contemporary working ethos for both solo and collaborative working and learning.

You have managed to respect the period and honour the architecture yet make it feel incredibly contemporary. It’s a great space.
