Preston Guild 2012

Preston Guild is an event that takes place every 20 years (yes, every 20 years!) and to be asked to play a major role is an honour indeed. So in the Olympic year of 2012 as part of the Cultural Olympiad, it was a case of 'all come back to ours' to enjoy a good ol' Northern knees-up and celebrate the creative history of Preston and wider Lancashire. Our Vintage Guild Weekend was the opening event to the Guild City Festival, and by focusing on the Guild years of 1922, 1952, 1972 and 1992, the current artistic scene and our vision for 2032's local creative landscape, visitors were treated to an immersive selection of live entertainment, activities and performances.

Working with our favourite festival director, Stella Hall and her team, Preston Guild 2012 was a run-away success, with over 150,000 vintage-lovers flocking through the gates and our founder Wayne Hemingway describing the weekend as 'one of the best things I have done in my career'.

Here are just a few snippets of feedback we received from the attendees:

“I was born in Preston but moved away with family place to place. I knew from my father that [the Guild is] held once every 20 years. I wanted to feel part of my hometown and I did. The Lancashire folk are so approachable and friendly. I loved the atmosphere in the Vintage tent and had makeovers and dressed up Vintage style.”

“The Vintage Weekend was like nostalgic magic had been scattered all over the park. The best of British and a real community feel including making the most of our beautiful park. A real winning event that made everyone feel good.”

“The event was a great success, and as a Prestonian who left for many years, it was great to be part of the Guild, especially with the response and good feeling that took over the Vintage weekend. I think, as others felt, it highlights an optimism for the hope of building on the Guild’s events to create smaller cultural events.”
