University of Chichester

Hemingway Design were tasked with conceiving and articulating the exterior detail and interiors of the new “Tech Park” at the University of Chichester.

The concept aims to unite students from the sciences, tech, engineering, arts and maths courses to produce graduates with varied skillsets ready to enter the modern workforce - a place where lines between disciplines are increasingly blurred.

We drew inspiration from traditional Sussex building methods to design a knapped flint exterior, whilst the interiors are driven by a modern material palette with site-cast concrete and charcoal-coated metal. These sleek intersecting lines are softened with oak detailing, carpets, birch ply cladding and linear acoustic baffles.

Collaborative learning spaces and a technology workshop help embrace the University’s commitment to proving a research-based framework. Beyond providing resources for academic staff to improve their own abilities, the building reflects the University’s use of active education tools, such as problem-based learning and group work.
